John Bernhardt papers 1846-1921.

The John C. Bernhardt Papers is a photocopy of a typewritten transcription of the diary of Major G.W.F. Harper of Caldwell County, North Carolina, and of the North Carolina Volunteers. Although Harper kept diaries from 1841 to 1921, the majority is from 1881 to 1921. Some parts and one separate section were written by his wife Ella Rankin and his sister-in-law Emma Rankin.

Emma Lydia Rankin (1838-1908) was the daughter of Rev. Jesse Rankin, first pastor of the Presbyterian congregation in Lenoir, N.C., and Ann Delight (Salmon) Rankin. She was a teacher and conducted a school for girls known as Kirkwood and was active in church and literary activities in Lenoir.
